Layers

In the 10 months online course I'm currently leading, The Moonlit Path, July is the month of The Night - Wholeness - Shadows. So during the class, we talked about the parts of us that we keep in darkness and hide, either because we disown them or because we're afraid to get hurt. When making a list of those parts with the groups, we were struck to see that they englobe EVERYTHING. Literally all that makes us human was listed on that board, and so we had to wonder: what's left? What are we really showing of ourselves, and if we are not showing anything of our true being, is this life worth it then? What exactly are we doing? And all that energy spent hiding these parts, what would happen if it was freed up?

I love working with patchwork, quilting, boro in textile because they're a literal visual representation of what I am trying to do in myself: bring all the parts out and connect them, acknowledge all the layers even if we can't always see them. When I work on a piece like this, it always brings me new awareness and a new sense of embodiment. Sometimes, when I'm struggling with some of my layers, I make a piece that's specifically meant to anchor or shift something, and as I'm making it my relationship to myself shifts and changes.
The Moonlit Path 2022, a course of self-discovery through embodiment and creativity, is open for registrations. If you want to come explore your layers with textile or other medium, join us!
